About Better Sleep Calculator
A practical sleep planning tool for adults, parents, students, shift workers, and anyone trying to make more sense of their sleep schedule.
Who This Site Is For
Better Sleep Calculator is designed for ordinary people who want to make more intentional decisions about their sleep schedules. It is not designed for clinical use and is not aimed at treating medical conditions. The typical user might be:
- An adult who wants to wake up feeling less groggy and is curious whether timing might help
- A parent trying to set a reasonable bedtime for their school-age child
- A student balancing early class times with late-night studying and wanting to plan smarter
- A shift worker looking for a practical way to estimate sleep windows around non-standard hours
- Anyone who has heard about "sleep cycles" and wants a concrete tool to apply that concept
Why This Site Exists
Sleep is one of the most important contributors to daily well-being, cognitive performance, emotional regulation, and long-term health — and also one of the most commonly neglected. Many people have never thought carefully about how the timing of sleep, not just the duration, might affect how they feel on waking.
The concept of sleep-cycle timing — trying to align wake time with the natural end of a cycle, when sleep is lightest — is simple, free, and accessible to anyone. Better Sleep Calculator was built to make that concept practical: enter a time, get suggestions, understand the logic behind them.
The site has expanded to include educational guides on sleep cycles, age-based sleep needs, sleep hygiene, shift work, and student sleep — because the calculator alone, without context, is less useful than the calculator paired with practical sleep knowledge.
How the Calculator Works
The calculator uses a simplified formula based on two assumptions: sleep cycles average approximately 90 minutes, and the typical person takes around 15 minutes to fall asleep after lying down (configurable). It offers four modes: a wake-up planner, bedtime planner, sleep-now mode, and nap planner.
Results show multiple cycle options with the recommended range for your selected age group highlighted. The Methodology page explains the formulas, limitations, and references in detail.
Editorial Principles
Original writing
All content is written originally for a general audience. We do not copy or closely paraphrase from other websites or academic abstracts.
No medical diagnosis
Better Sleep Calculator does not diagnose sleep disorders or make clinical recommendations. For persistent sleep problems, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
Practical planning focus
The emphasis is on actionable, practical guidance that does not require clinical expertise to apply.
Plain-language explanations
We use hedged language — 'may help,' 'general guidance,' 'planning estimate' — to accurately reflect the uncertainty in applying population-level sleep science to individuals.
References for educational context only
Where academic sources are cited, they provide transparent context, not clinical validation. See the Sources page for full citations and usage notes.
